Direct Examination

Jane Doe told the jury that from 2021 to 2024, she was in a relationship with Sean Combs. She identified him in a photograph.

One of the nicknames she called him was “Bert,” while Mr. Combs called her “Ernie,” referring to the iconic characters from the children’s show Sesame Street.

Ms. Doe first met Mr. Combs during a girls’ trip to Miami in November 2020. At the time, Mr. Combs was romantically involved with one of her girlfriends and invited the group to dinner that night at his home on 2 Star Island.

Five years earlier, Ms. Doe had briefly met Mr. Combs at a Father’s Day event.

On the first night at 2 Star Island, Ms. Doe described Mr. Combs as “charming, sweet, hospitable, and nice.” He hosted a dinner for the group. After dinner, they went on a yacht, where there was a bit of flirting between her and Mr. Combs. This was her close friend’s man.

They exchanged numbers after “bumping into each other” on the yacht, and that’s when the nicknames “Bert and Ernie” began.

Later, Ms. Doe observed drugs at Mr. Combs’ home. One of the girlfriends asked for drugs while they were in the pool. 

Ms. Doe and Mr. Combs then went to his studio, where a man produced some pink powder. She recalled asking, “Is this safe?” Both men looked at her before saying together, “It’s the best.”

“My girlfriend was upset with me. She thought something was going on between Mr. Combs and I,” Ms. Doe testified. They left the party abruptly.

On the last day of the trip, Mr. Combs invited them to a movie night at his home theater. During the movie, they texted each other. He texted her asking if she was okay and expressing interest in taking her out sometime. Ms. Doe replied, “It’s complicated right now, but we’ll be in touch.”

After returning to the East Coast, Ms. Doe and Mr. Combs stayed in contact through text messages. She described Mr. Combs as flirtatious, repeatedly inviting her back to Miami and actively pursuing her.

Ms. Doe explained, “My girlfriend got engaged and moved overseas. So I felt that she was OK. I could potentially explore this Sean thing.”

The next invitation came when she planned to visit Miami for an event in late January 2021. Mr. Combs offered to pay for her hotel stay. Their first date took place in her room at the InterContinental Hotel, where they had dinner on the balcony. Ms. Doe said, “The first date lasted five days.”

She told Mr. Combs that she “dated someone really close to him” and disclosed that her child’s father and Mr. Combs disliked each other. 

She testified that Mr. Combs was “very, very vocal” that “he didn’t care, not about my past girlfriend, and not about my child’s father. And then the only thing he had concerns about was the person he is very close to.”

Mr. Combs told her that his “relationship with her girlfriend was really more like a friendship more than anything. It wasn’t really as romantic as maybe she had assumed it was.”

They had sex during the five days she stayed, went out to a restaurant, and spent time talking and getting to know each other. After the trip, Ms. Doe said, “I was pretty head over heels for Sean.”

Ms. Doe testified that Mr. Combs gave her a love bracelet engraved with the word “love.”

She also told Mr. Combs her birthday was coming up. He excitedly planned an island getaway for them to Turks and Caicos and the Bahamas, which lasted 15 days. Ms. Doe described the experience as “amazing.”

During the trip to Turks, Ms. Doe told the jury, “we were just really passionate about one another. It was very lust filled.”

Ms. Doe shared with Mr. Combs that she worked as a content creator and influencer on social media, advertising brands on her platforms.

At the end of the Turks leg of the trip, Mr. Combs told Ms. Doe he would send her $10,000 because she had been with him and was unable to work.

She testified that Mr. Combs suggested she use ecstasy during the trip. Prior to this, Ms. Doe had used drugs only twice before, taking ecstasy on New Year’s Eve in 2014 and 2015.
