Schumer Slams “Big, Ugly Bill” as Senate Passes Trump’s Signature Legislation

WASHINGTON D.C. – In a fervent and often fiery address from the Senate floor, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) vehemently condemned the “One Big, Beautiful Bill” as it narrowly passed the chamber today, labeling it a “monstrosity” and a “big, ugly bill” that he asserted would inflict severe harm on American families and communities.

Schumer’s speech was the culmination of days of Democratic efforts to slow down and expose what they argue are the detrimental provisions of the expansive legislation. His caucus had notably forced a full, marathon reading of the 940-page bill, a rare procedural tactic aimed at highlighting the bill’s contents and drawing public attention to its potential consequences.

Throughout his remarks, Schumer relentlessly attacked the core tenets of the bill, particularly its sweeping tax cuts and significant reductions to social safety net programs. He argued that the tax provisions, while touted as benefiting working and middle-class Americans, disproportionately favor billionaires and large corporations, creating a scenario where “permanent tax breaks for billionaires” are paid for by “working families.”

A central point of Schumer’s critique was the bill’s impact on healthcare and food assistance. Citing analyses from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO), he warned that the legislation would lead to millions of Americans losing health insurance coverage, specifically pointing to the projected 11.8 million more uninsured by 2034. He also highlighted deep cuts to Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), emphasizing that these changes would “strip away people’s healthcare, forcing kids to go hungry, [and] denying communities the resources they need.”

Schumer accused Republicans of employing “fake math and budgetary hocus-pocus” to obscure the true costs of the bill, particularly in how they accounted for the extension of prior tax cuts. He asserted that the bill would significantly increase the national debt, contrary to proponents’ claims of deficit reduction. “This bill will INCREASE our debt by more than $3.3 TRILLION,” Schumer declared, “More than any single bill in American history.”

Furthermore, the Democratic leader expressed alarm over the bill’s impact on green energy initiatives, stating that it would “wipe out wind and solar investments nationwide” by rolling back billions in tax credits. He also touched upon the bill’s substantial allocation for border security and mass deportations, though his primary focus remained on the economic and social consequences for everyday Americans.

Schumer’s speech underscored the deep ideological chasm separating the two parties on fiscal and social policy. He portrayed the passage of the “One Big, Beautiful Bill” not as a step forward, but as a “betrayal” of the American people, signaling that the fight over this legislation is far from over as it now heads to the House of Representatives.
