The Scoop Digital Newspaper: June 2025
Amazon is undergoing a major transformation, and at the center of it is artificial intelligence (AI). On June 18, 2025, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy confirmed in a company-wide memo that the tech giant will gradually reduce its corporate workforce over the coming years. This isn’t a typical layoff, it’s a long-term restructuring tied directly to the rise of AI across every level of Amazon’s operations.
According to Jassy, this shift is driven not by short-term financial concerns but by operational efficiency. More than 1,000 AI tools are already integrated into Amazon’s systems, from automated coding assistants to AI-powered customer service bots. These tools are reshaping how work gets done, and who gets to keep doing it.
Jobs Most at Risk
Several roles are being flagged as vulnerable:
Customer Service and Software Development: These are the first functions being replaced. AI systems are now handling thousands of customer inquiries daily and even writing code.
Alexa Division: Reports say this team will be heavily reduced in 2025 as voice AI becomes more autonomous and efficient.
Middle Management: Amazon has already eliminated 14,000 manager-level jobs this year. AI enables flatter hierarchies and faster decision-making, making many leadership roles obsolete.
Administrative and Compliance Roles: HR, communications, and other repetitive corporate functions are increasingly handled by AI platforms.
Industry-wide data supports this trend. Challenger, Gray & Christmas reported over 20,000 layoffs across tech this year due to AI-related “technological updates.” Goldman Sachs previously predicted that AI could automate up to 25% of all jobs, and that reality is beginning to unfold.
How Can You Stay Relevant?
Jassy suggests that Amazon workers, and anyone in the tech industry, should pivot now:
Learn AI tools: Get comfortable using Amazon’s internal platforms like Bedrock, Claude, and Sonnet.
Reskill: Training in areas like data analysis or workflow automation can make employees more valuable in the AI era.
Join AI-forward teams: Divisions building or managing AI systems are growing, not shrinking.
Big Picture: It’s Not Just Amazon
This trend extends beyond Amazon. Microsoft is planning major layoffs as it invests $80 billion in AI data centers. Amazon’s own capital spending will hit $105 billion this year, largely driven by AI infrastructure for AWS.
While these changes promise operational efficiency, they bring uncertainty for employees. For many, this is a wake-up call to start future-proofing their careers before AI does it for them.
