Musk and Trump: From Political Allies to Public Adversaries

By T.L. Reigns

The Scoop Digital Newspaper: June 2025

In late May and early June 2025, the relationship between Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and owner of X, and President Donald Trump unraveled dramatically, moving from cordial collaboration to escalating public feud.

The Catalyst: “One Big Beautiful Bill.” Musk, having briefly served as head of the newly-created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), erupted on social media, calling the bill a “disgusting abomination” and warning it would negate DOGE’s streamlining efforts.

The Feud Intensifies: Implications and Retaliations

The public conflict escalated rapidly. On Truth Social, Trump branded Musk “disgruntled,” accused him of “losing his mind,” hinted at cutting EV tax credits and threatened to pull government contracts, including those with SpaceX.

In a bold retort, Musk proposed founding a centrist political movement dubbed “The America Party,” claiming it could represent the “80 percent in the middle,” an audacious challenge to traditional partisan lines  .

June 5: The Epstein Files Bombshell

On June 5, Musk dropped his most explosive claim yet via X:

Time to drop the really big bomb: @realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files.

That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT! Mark this post for the future. The truth will come out.

This sweeping claim prompted Democrats like Reps. Stephen Lynch and Robert Garcia to issue formal inquiries to Attorney General Pam Bondi and Director Kash Patel, demanding clarification by June 20 on why those files remain redacted  .

Political and Financial Fallout

Tesla’s shares sank roughly 14-15% following the fireworks, erasing tens of billions from Musk’s net worth and raising investor concerns about lost subsidies and contract vetting. Meanwhile, Republican polling showed 71% siding with Trump in the escalating dispute.

Tensions De-escalate (June 6–7)

By June 7, Musk quietly removed the Epstein-files posts, signaling a partial retreat amid mounting pressure. He also walked back threats to decommission SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft following warnings from Trump about federal contracts.

Trump responded coolly, maintaining he had “no plans” to reconcile and that Musk would face “serious consequences” if he threw support behind Democrats.  Musk, meanwhile, seemed to step away from the most strident rhetoric, replying “Fair enough” when Trump signaled he wished him well.

Conclusion

Within just two weeks, a once-thriving partnership between Musk and Trump transformed into a full-scale public rift. Driven by budget disagreements and amplified by explosive social media posts, the feud dented investor confidence and intensified political furors. Musk’s searing allegation that Trump’s name is in the still-sealed Epstein files drew congressional scrutiny, even as Musk later deleted the claim. Trump’s retaliation, threatening Musk’s access to government contracts and branding him unstable, underscored the rapid collapse of a private alliance.

As tensions ease, a fragile truce emerges, though neither man appears ready to bury the hatchet. With Tesla’s stock recovering slightly and both sides reassessing, the broader implications, for electric vehicle policy, public trust, and political alliances, remain uncertain.
