Biden’s new law banning the app took effect.

President Donald Trump had suggested this ban in 2020, after stating that as of today, President Trump stated that he would issue an executive order on Monday, January 20, 2025, that would stall the ban on TikTok. However, spectators are not fully confident in the ban being stopped.

This afternoon TikTok made an announcement that it was restoring its services after President-elect Trump, stated that he would revive the app on Monday. Trump is set to be inaugurated tomorrow, Monday January 20, 2025.

The basis for the ban on TikTok by the U.S. government was upheld on Saturday because of a concern for national security.

It was stated that the need to preserve national security outweighed freedom of speech.

Access to the app earlier this morning, was restored to many U.S. However, there are reports that some users have regained access, but have not been able to use the app to its fullest ability. Some of the app’s features are still restricted for these users.

As more users regain full access the announcement has made headlines. TikTok thanked Trump for “providing the necessary clarity and assurance to our service providers that they will face no penalties (for) providing TikTok to over 170 million Americans and allowing over 7 million small businesses to thrive.”

President-Elect Trump had made a statement that he would extend the period of time before the new TikTok ban laws could take place. It was in hopes that he could make a deal to protect the United States national security interests. By Creating a deal that would allow the United States to have stake in a join venture with TikTok.

Trump plans to make an executive order after his inauguration on Monday. His executive order would include that there would be no liability for any company that helped make TikTok stay active for its users before he could make his order.

Trump had previously mentioned giving TikTok a 90-day time period before the ban would take effect again after he takes office.

The law does state that a U.S. President is able to issue a one-time extension on bans, for 90 days.

“A law banning TikTok has been enacted in the U.S. Unfortunately, that means you can’t use TikTok for now. We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to reinstate TikTok once he takes office. Please stay tuned.”1

-TikTok (previous announcement)

TikTok was shutdown for 12 hours in the United States before coming back online for many users thanks to President-elect, Donald Trump.

TikTok was not the only app owned by the Chinese company ByteDance that was shutdown on Saturday. Lemon8 and CapCut were two apps that also became unavailable on the Apple and Google Play stores.

TikTok has over 170 million American users who use the app for news, entertainment and community. It is said that Trump is most likely to gain favor in the younger members of the United States’ population due to the restoration of the app.

Although support for the 90-day extension to take place before TikTok would face being banned again, is considered a win for the public; this is only a temporary solution. Besides needing to make a deal with TikTok within the 90-day period; Trump has faced challenges from those who appose an extension in the ban. This included some of Trumps own party.

It will take some effort to reverse the ban on TikTok because the law was passed by Congress and was signed into order by President Joe Biden. Making the challenge of reversing the ban altogether a difficult road ahead for President-elect Trump.

“I have a warm spot in my heart for TikTok.”

-Trump
